Your Best at Home Work Space Yet!

We’re just going to come right out and say it – working from home can be a love/hate relationship.
We all know it, and as much as we can boast about the great perks that come from being your own boss and working within the comforts of your own home (and trust us – there are a lot!), we are also aware that it takes a lot of dedication to ensure you make the most of your time and succeed at your at-home, lady boss lifestyle. And if you’re like us, or just any human being in general, this starts and ends with one single space: you’re office. Whether you are lucky enough to dedicate an entire room to your home office, or have a small, off-the-kitchen type space to work with, we believe that making the most out of it is what’s important. That’s why we’ve put together this turnkey list of how to turn your drab workspace into a number crunching, force to be reckoned with.

Pick the Perfect Location

When you’re creating a workspace for your home don’t over look the fact that there may be times when you’re the only one working, while everyone else is simply going about their everyday life. If you’re the type of person who gets distracted easily, perhaps having your office setup in a busy hotspot, like say off the kitchen for example, may not be the best idea. This could be as simple as having a door/divider or making your desk point away from the distractions. Or it could be something a little larger, like having your office tucked away where it’s harder for people or everyday distractions to find you.
Lighting is another important decision in your choice for a home workspace. For most people, natural light and a window will help increase productivity – for others, it’s a distraction. It’s best to find these things out before the location of your office.

Minimal Distractions

If we’re being honest, we all know human distractions may not be your biggest downfall when it comes to working – instead its that thing you’re most likely reading this article on. In fact, according to comScore’s2017 Cross Platform Future in Focus report, the average American adult (18+) spends 2 hours and 51 minutes on their smartphone everyday. That’s a lot of time and energy that could be focused on work, if you ask us. We’re not saying to ditch the phone altogether – most of us do need it for work these day – but how about setting specific hours that you’re going to work and leave the phone alone. Be realistic. Saying you’re going to get up at 6:00AM everyday and work till 5:00PM isn’t likely to happen; but if you work for three hours, take a break and work for a three hours and take a break… you could really see some benefits from short burst working with a reward of a break, or some phone time. Everyone is different and knows what works for them – so use that to your advantage to make the most of your time.

Personal Workspace Touches

This is an important one if you ask us – this is where you get to make your office reflective of your personality, and add your own styling touches! You could be spending a lot of time in this space, so be sure to make it practical, comfortable and a place that makes you focus. Paint your office your favourite colour, or keep it white with pops of colour in your artwork. Have everything organized down to a science, or be a minimalist in your design. Get a comfortable chair, have a desk that inspires you when you look at it, use quotes, photos or flowers to decorate – just make it perfect for you, there is not a ‘one-size fits all’ approach to this. Get creative and have fun!
